Description
Old barns dot the landscape of New York State, serving as reminders of the agricultural history of the region. The passage of time and influence of the elements often cause these historic structures to fall into disrepair. Fortunately, there are a number of grant options and other financial incentives available for those looking to restore old barns in New York State.
Public Grants
Barns that are listed on the state or national historic register are eligible for historic preservation grants through programs administered by the State Historic Preservation Office. The grant programs factor in location as well as historic significance of the barn. Grants may also be available from local state municipalities depending on the historical significance of the barn and its intended purpose.
Private Grants
Private grants are available for historic barn restoration, though generally they exist for not-for-profit organizations or barns listed on one of the historic registers. Typically grants through private organizations are focused on one aspect of the restoration, such as structural analysis, historical reports or consultant studies.
Tax Incentives
Under the Farmers Protection and Farm Preservation Act, New York State barns that were in service before 1936 and are still income producing buildings are eligible for a tax credit of up to 25 percent of the rehabilitation cost of the barn. Federal tax incentive programs also exist for preservation.
