Description
"When Harvard College had been in existence for one hundred and forty-four years there were only two buildings standing in the Town of Kingsbury, both in the area of the present village; all previous buildings had been burned in the Tory raid of 1780, except these two. For practical purposes our village got its start in 1780, with the rebuilding and new building that started then. In those early years we know that the town was covered with a thick, dark, forest of virgin pine, so we assume that the first residents spent considerable time in land clearing and ridding the area of large pine stumps, in building houses and establishing homes and basic industries. In this period mills were built at the upper and lower falls and the dam was built on the upper falls. Once these needs had been taken care of, people began to give some thought to other phases of their lives and, about 1800, churches appeared in the general area for the first time."
– James R. Cronkhite, "Historical Survey, First Presbyterian Church, Hudson Falls, N.Y. 1803-1953"
The first church building in Sandy Hill was the Presbyterian Church, erected in 1826. When that structure provided to be too small, it was torn down and the present church was erected in the years 1894-95.
